Abstract

This study examines the business transformation process of Islamic boarding schools through digital media-based units to achieve economic independence, focusing on the Santri Berasan (SB) Media unit at Pondok Pesantren Manbaul Ulum, Banyuwangi. Using a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation involving key informants including the person in charge of SB Media, unit manager, internal and external employees, students, and consumers. The findings reveal that the business transformation occurred gradually, beginning with live streaming of routine religious studies using simple equipment, evolving into a professional digital media service unit serving both internal boarding school needs and the broader community. This transformation encompasses structural, functional, and organizational changes adapting to technological developments. The pesantren plays three critical roles: as facilitator providing material and immaterial support, as supervisor ensuring alignment with Islamic values, and as director maintaining strategic vision alignment. Despite challenges including limited equipment and non-optimal training programs, the entrepreneurial spirit and continuous innovation of students have driven business growth. The transformation has enhanced the pesantren's economic independence through cost efficiency in internal promotions, external income from public services, and strengthened institutional reputation attracting new students. This research contributes to the theoretical development of Islamic boarding school economic empowerment and offers practical insights for similar institutions seeking digital transformation strategies.
